The service program in the Senior School provides the opportunity for every student to become actively involved in and contribute to the greater good. One of our goals is to assist our students to discover and develop talents that may otherwise remain dormant, to enable students to learn about themselves and build skills of communication and collaboration, encourage the willingness to take risks, and to evoke a true sense of compassion.
All senior students participate in service activities and are encouraged to contribute a minimum of 30 hours per year, but many students exceed this requirement as they experience the many benefits of serving others.
There are numerous service opportunities through which our students are able to make a contribution to the school, community and world. Student initiatives such as TREK (Teens Running For Every Kid) have raised funds to build schools in developing countries such as Ecuador, Sierra Leone and Kenya. And next year, our senior students will have the opportunity to visit the Maasai Mara to see for themselves the difference they have made for the students of Kenya.
Every year these students join the Junior School students as well as faculty and parents in the Terry Fox Run, which raises funds for cancer research. Hoops For Heart (Heart and Stroke Foundation) has the full participation of our senior student body; by receiving pledges and selling raffle tickets they make a substantial contribution to this cause.
Southridge students, through the support of the Toskan Foundation are given the opportunity to research a local service agency and direct $5,000 of Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) foundation funds to that agency. Grade 9 Career and Personal Planning students research a number of local non-profit service providers and make presentations to the Senior School student body. At a special assembly, a panel of judges adjudicates the presentations and chooses a winner. This activity has been beneficial in helping raise the awareness of our students, about local community services and their needs.
