Our senior swim team raced very successfully last Friday and Saturday at Watermania. The girls placed 3rd of 76 schools who had swimmers advance to Saturday’s finals. The boys (who were fewer) placed 16th out of 62 schools in the finals. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Stephanie, Lizzie, Cindy and Emma won the open girls 4x50 free relay and beat Southridge's record set by Katherine Toy, Stephanie, Cindy and Isabelle Lei in 2016 to set a new record.
  • Lauren Toy set a new provincial record in her 50 m breaststroke to win that event.
  • Emma also set a provincial record to win the B girls I00m IM event.

There were only 10 records set at the meet and our swimmers broke 3 of them!

  • Stephanie, Lauren, Cindy and Emma placed third in the open girls medley relay after putting up a good fight to try to beat the second place team.
  • Stephanie, Lizzie, Cindy and Emma placed second in the open girls 4x100 free relay - by 9/100 of a second...Almost, next time:)
  • Jun, Stephanie, Lizzie and Kaijia placed 4th in the open mixed free relay. Of note in this event is that Kaijia swam a 24.9 secs 50m freestyle which is his personal best and likely the fastest any Southridge swimmer has ever gone at a provincial championship.
  • Kevin, Malcolm, Jun and Kaijia placed fifth in the open boys free relay after giving it 150% effort. They swam some great times!
  • Madeleine S, Lauren, Malcolm in Jun place fifth in the B mixed medley relay.
  • Mia, Brighe, Isabel H, Sunny Yang, Joe Bird, Keith Christofferson and Yik Fung also competed in various relays some of which placed in the top ten.
  • A special thanks to Brighe Buxton for filling in for Madeleine Scarth who was not feeling well.  We also really appreciate the help of all of our grads who helped us through a very busy swim season by helping to gather relays and keeping our team together.

Thank you very much also to Dr. Ruby Chan (Lauren’s mom) and Rachel Lawson for volunteering as stroke and turn officials at this year’s championships. It was an exciting couple of days at the pool and we are looking forward to a new swim season in the fall of 2019. Well done, everyone!
