Could Southridge be Right for Your Child?

Students are excited, energized in the right environment

Southridge School, located in South Surrey, was founded as much on the values of trust, moral character and the power of community as it was on exceptional academics.

“Our founding headmaster, Alan Brown, described our culture as ‘a lighthearted place of serious purpose’ because he understood that the goal was not only to provide a well-rounded education, but also to develop people who want to make the world a better place,” says Renée Lepp, Director of Admissions. “He believed it started with trust—meaning that every child should feel safe and respected in our school. This culture of trust is in our DNA and one tangible way we demonstrate that trust is by having no locks on our lockers.”

Since 1995, Southridge, a co-ed, K-12 independent school of 680 students, has nurtured a community grounded in the belief that a strong moral character is as important as a strong mind. Southridge prides itself on giving its students a first-rate education, as well as the integrity, compassion and confidence to apply it in a way that makes a difference in the world.

But as a parent, how do you know which school is the right fit for your child? Which school aligns with your family values and goals? Southridge understands that one of the most important decisions parents will make regarding their child’s future is deciding which school to enrol them in.

“We believe that Southridge is a special place, yet we also appreciate we aren’t a fit for everyone. Fortunately, there are many excellent schools in B.C., many of which offer wonderful programs and opportunities for kids, and this is our hope for every child,” says Lepp.

“We encourage parents and their children to attend our Open House (held annually in November) to get a feeling for our school community, while meeting the teachers and students,” says Lepp. “We also encourage families to check out other independent schools, as well as their local public school.”

In the end, as no two children are exactly alike, nor are any two schools. Spend some time getting to know what schools offer and what your child needs to thrive and achieve their full potential. “We recommend that families choose the right school for their child, which should not be done by simply answering which school has the highest ranking,” says Lepp.

While Southridge offers a rigorous academic program, it is also a school that offers plenty of opportunity for fun extra-curricular activities. “While the pace at Southridge is quick, we find most children are excited and energized by the environment here,” she says, and adds: “The strong partnership between parents and the school supports our students to take risks, be bold and find joy in learning.”

In terms of what Southridge looks for in an applicant, Lepp says: “Children who love to play, care passionately about what they do, are willing to give it a go, learn from and with their peers, and enjoy a good challenge are tailor-made for our program. Simply put, Southridge is a perfect fit for those individuals who never let go of that spark they had in kindergarten…At Southridge, we love being a part of that magic!”

Southridge is currently accepting applications for Grades K-12 for the 2018-2019 school year. Application deadline is Dec. 1, 2017. Visit the Admissions section of our website to learn more.
