Hear ye! Hear ye! Attention all little knights and princesses! By Royal Proclamation, you have all been invited to join us in a week of learning and fun. Enjoy practising your beginner reading and writing skills while exploring the arts. In Drama, we will build castles, make costumes, role play and so much more. Through music, we will learn about letters, sounds and making words. We will dance and move in proper Royal fashion, using creative movement. We will also enjoy baking, crafting and cooperative play. This camp is designed to prepare children for full-time school, while having a blast. Students should wear play clothes and runners. On warm days, please bring a swim suit and towel. Learn all about our oceans and our under the sea friends for a fun and educational week. Our morning will focus on oral language development, social skills, phonemic awareness and numeracy development through music, cooperative games and daily calendar fun. Afternoons will consist of daily crafts, painting, centres and story time. We will head outside to play with sidewalk chalk, paints, and sprinklers and have some free time fun, so pack bathing suits, towel and sunscreen every day. We will conduct experiments in a variety of different and exciting scientific fields such as nature (biology), mixtures (chemistry), and movement and force (physics). You’re invited to participate in fun and engaging hands-on activities, ask lots of questions, and share your own ideas and special perspectives about how the world works. This is a great opportunity for young campers to learn about different scientific concepts by watching what is happening, guessing what might happen next, experimenting with different ideas and making new discoveries! For parents, it is a wonderful opportunity to help their children learn to think more critically and gain confidence in their own ability to solve problems. Campers will discover how fossils are formed, make a 3-D dinosaur land, meet a few herbivores, omnivores and carnivores along the way to dig up some fossils. Find your colourful side with pencil crayons, oil pastels, paint, papier-mâché and special objects. Campers will focus on the amazing power of colour as they discover their inner creative talent. Storytelling and acting will help campers visualize what they are drawing. This wonderful, colourful art will then be become a back drop to a ‘play’ from a story. Campers can have any level of artistic ability as long as they bring a smile and their creative energy with them. A colour extravaganza will be held on the last day of camps for parents and friends to enjoy the week’s fabulous results. Participants will increase their overall level of physical fitness while building strong leadership skills. Our activities cater to the individual level and interests of each group. Campers will participate in a wide variety of different sports including: floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, introductory touch rugby, ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf, California kickball, soccer, capture the flag and dodge ball. In between the action, players will be taught how to make lifestyle choices that promote nutrition, health, fitness and athletic potential. This exciting camp is designed to help children improve their communication skills through the dramatization of familiar stories. Campers will be engaged in both body and mind as they work to memorize scripts and communicate ideas. Each class will include warm up exercises which incorporate language and movement. Following the warm up, students will hear a story to which they must respond dramatically. Responses will require students to write scripts, rehearse lines and perform for an audience. Daily, movement exercises will help students build self-confidence, while encouraging them to consider posture and proximity when performing. Cooperation will also be enhanced in this camp through team building activities. This is a great opportunity to make friends, have fun and develop language proficiency! This ‘hands-on’ science camp is designed for fun and learning. This is science that you can see, smell, hear, touch and taste! Yes - taste! We’ll bake cookies and make homemade ice cream in a bag. Campers will conduct scientific experiments which allow them to explore their senses through play, arts and crafts. Each day, students will focus on a different sensory organ. Join us, as we create optical illusions, make stink bombs and design experimental models. Many of our activities will highlight similarities and differences between human and animal senses. Are you ready to soak up the summer rays with some amazing and awesome adventures? Each day you’ll head off in a different direction; starting Monday you’ll be hiking and exploring Lynn Valley and visiting the suspension bridges with lunch by the river pools. On Tuesday you’ll head off in a different direction for a wet and wild day at Cultus Lake Waterslides. Wednesday you’ll enjoy the hands-on exhibits at Science World, and Thursday you’ll head off to the Aquarium in Stanley Park and end up at Lumberman’s Arch. Wrap up this amazing week of fun and learning by heading off to Playland on Friday for a full day of fun. All admissions are included.

Campers will write journals, stories and poetry that are full of suspense, humour, mystery, surprise, and triumph over evil. A large portion of the camp is active, as we will play games, go on observation walks and complete guerilla writing challenges. Campers will discover fresh sources of inspiration from their own lives and learn how to create mood, develop characters, and make their writing come to life! This camp is suitable for all levels of writers. Campers will conclude their week with a portfolio of completed stories, as well as having lots of ideas for future stories that they can continue working on. In the morning, players will head to the field for soccer instruction by the exceptional team from Total Soccer Systems (TSS). TSS Academy is a professionally run soccer development organization located in Richmond, BC. TSS runs soccer training programs throughout the year to help players advance their skills and understanding of the game. The core staff at TSS are full-time coaching professionals who subscribe to a set of beliefs with respect to coaching and development. In the afternoon, players will work on interactive math projects that combine basic math concepts, higher order thinking skills and hands-on fun. They will practice applying their math skills by solving a variety of challenging word problems, puzzles and math/logic games. Southridge is thrilled to have TSS Academy return this summer to help coach young players in the great game of soccer. TSS Academy is a professional, soccer development organization located in Richmond, BC. TSS programs support youth soccer players of all ages, whether they are young and impressionable beginners, competitive young adults seeking college and university placement or somewhere in between. Their core staff members are full-time professionals who are nationally certified by the Canadian Soccer Association, and they subscribe to a set of beliefs with respect to coaching and development - TSS Academy strives to teach youth how to become skillful and effective soccer players by providing a professional and optimal learning environment. TSS helps young players of all abilities to advance their game. One of the foundations of their program is to have “like-skilled and like-minded” players train together. TSS has training groups for high-level elite players as well as training groups for beginner players.

Toot! Toot! All aboard! It’s time to travel to the Land of Enchantment featuring Harry Potter. Whimsical Instructor, Head Mistress Schaufele, takes you on an enchanting journey into a land of wizards, magic and fun. Experience a house-sorting ceremony followed by fun-filled days where you will learn magic spells using everyday items, and enter a magical dueling tournament. Campers will learn about the care of magical creatures, create their own wands and capes, create enchanting pieces of art, learn how to play Quidditch, learn about the owl post as well as learn the secrets of the Marauder’s Map. Use your imagination to experience a week visiting Hogwarts - where anything can happen. To end this magical camp, compete for the house cup and see who wins at the “end of camp” feast! Learning to stop...take a breath...and look around is something we neglect to do in this fast moving often stressful world. “JUST BE.” is a program designed to address the issues girls are faced with in their ever changing and challenging lives. Understanding and incorporating the skills to make positive change in one’s life and in the lives of those around them is the goal of this program. We will address the concepts of self-esteem, self-respect, self-awareness and how to be a well-adjusted community member. Participants will become active in their development of skills that will help them effectively deal with the demands that society, media and peers place on them. The camp includes yoga and relaxation, art therapy, problem solving and conflict resolution. As well, nutrition, healthy lifestyle, positive body image and socialization skills will round out the many things you can take away from this camp. Janine Orlando is a teacher, school and registered clinical counselor in Langley with over 17 years of experience with youth and families. Janine’s skills as a therapist and educator, combined with her qualifications as a yoga instructor and personal trainer provide a well-rounded perspective to life skill development. Come explore the history of sculpture, from cave people to Picasso and beyond, through this “hands-on” camp. Do you like working on problem solving by doing hands on activities and building your own robots that actually move around and do the tasks for you? Then, this is the camp for you! In the Hands on Robotics camp, students will build their own robot by exploring the principles of mechanics involving motors, wheels and axles using Lego’s cutting edge NXT Mindstorm technology. Campers will become familiar with input devices such as touch, light, rotation and ultrasonic sensors along with output devices such as motors, sound and lights. Campers will be engaged in problem solving tasks by creating their own robots and attempt to meet a daily challenge in which they will build and program their robot individually to solve the challenge. Use of Southridge Lego NXT kits is included. This camp includes daily recreational breaks. A good understanding of English is necessary.

S222 - PHYSICAL FUN: HIKING, BIKING, SWIMMING

Ages 10 - 13 (as of 12/31/14)

Join us for a week of physical fun while we hike, bike and swim around the Lower Mainland. Our week begins with a hike on Seymour Mountain - lots of great trails here to explore. Tuesday it’s off to Teapot Mountain near Cultus Lake for swimming and hiking in a scenic setting. On Wednesday, campers will tackle the famous Grouse Grind and take in the view from the top. Thursday we will head off to Alouette Lake for a hike and some swimming. On Friday, we will start and end our bike trip at the trailhead (40th Ave) and head off to Centennial Beach in Tsawwassen for a day of biking by the sea. Enjoy physical fun with these exciting learning explorations during this busy week! Campers must provide their own bicycle. This camp qualifies for the child fitness tax credit.

With titles like Bone building an increasing presence in school libraries, bookstores, and even classrooms, graphic novels are not your Grandfather’s comic book. This unique form of visual storytelling is recognized by academics, school librarians, and literary critics as an engaging mix of art and literature that is truly breaking new ground. After a writing and design process, students will create their own short graphic novel using a combination of digital imaging techniques of their choosing. Choices include drawing on tablets, taking photographs and altering them into line drawings, and greenscreening. Students will then use a layout application to add dialogue and put their panels into graphic novel format. All students will go home with a copy of their work on a flash drive. This camp includes daily recreational breaks. A good understanding of English is necessary.

S226 - PARENT BOOTCAMP

(9:15 am - 10:15 am)

Southridge is proud to present its first Parent Bootcamp. It is an intense group workout that combines both cardio and strength/resistance training to tone and tighten from head-to-toe. Although physically demanding, participants of all fitness levels work together to achieve the results they deserve using well-researched methods like calisthenics and plyometrics. Get ready to join a group that motivates and challenges each other to be the healthiest and most confident version of yourself possible! Sessions are held Monday to Friday from 9:15 to 10:15. Bring your own yoga mat and water bottle. Instructor is BCRPA certified personal trainer and cycling instructor Myrna Lew. Myrna, also a Southridge teacher, has taught bootcamps for University students and Mom and baby bootcamps. She is also currently a cycling instructor at Steve Nash fitness in Morgan Crossing and Langley as well as a provincial body building competitor. She brings with her a wealth of fitness knowledge and enthusiasm.

Campers will be provided with low-key activities and some down time after a busy day. All campers will be required to be checked out by their parents by 5:00 p.m. This is a per week commitment.
